As South Africa’s first
black President, he led the dismantling of apartheid, while also focused on cutting racism, poverty and inequality.
Mandela’s life had global impact, but his determination, powerful perseverance and fight for social justice inspired and moved us on a personal level.
One of the Voices team remembers sitting with their mum, not fully understanding as she cried watching him walk free from prison. Others may remember the first time they read his speech from the dock of the court in 1964, comprehending his determination to see through the equality for which he was ‘prepared to die’. Some may have been inspired by the daily grace with which he spoke to anyone, from world leader, to young child.
As the world looks back at his life, and what Mandela meant on a political, social and personal level, we want you to share your memories, and tributes to this global hero.
